Not sure what shoes to wear for your first canyoning adventure? Here’s a simple guide for beginners and tourists with no previous experience.
If you're preparing for your first canyoning adventure, one of the most common questions is:
What shoes should I wear?
Don’t worry — you’re not expected to own professional canyoning gear. This guide explains everything in simple terms so you can arrive confident and well prepared.
Why Shoes Matter So Much in Canyoning
Canyoning involves:
- Walking on wet rocks
- Hiking on forest trails
- Sliding down natural rock formations
- Standing in moving water
The terrain is often slippery and uneven, so the right shoes are essential for:
- Grip
- Stability
- Comfort
- Safety
The Best Option: Lightweight Trail or Sports Shoes
For beginners and tourists, the best choice is:
Lightweight sports shoes or trail running shoes
Look for shoes that:
- Have good grip (rubber sole with texture)
- Stay securely tied
- Protect your toes
- Can get wet
You do not need expensive professional canyoning shoes for your first trip. If you own hiking shoes with solid grip, those also work well.
What About Socks?
We provide neoprene socks for all participants.
Neoprene keeps your feet warm in cold mountain water and adds extra comfort inside your shoes.
Because of this:
- You don’t need to bring special socks
- You don’t need thick hiking socks
- Thin synthetic socks are optional but not necessary
The neoprene socks will be worn inside your shoes during the activity.
What You Should Not Wear
Avoid these at all costs:
- Flip-flops
- Sandals (even sports sandals)
- Water shoes with thin soles
- Smooth-soled sneakers
- Old worn-out trainers with no grip
These can slip easily and increase the risk of falling.
“But My Shoes Will Get Wet…”
Yes — and that’s completely normal.
Canyoning shoes:
- Get wet
- Drain naturally
- Dry quickly afterward
Choose shoes you’re comfortable getting wet. Most modern sports shoes dry within a day.
Pro tip: bring a second pair of dry shoes for after the activity.
Simple Summary
- Wear sports or trail shoes with good grip
- Make sure they stay securely on your feet
- Accept that they will get wet
- Neoprene socks are provided
- Avoid sandals and smooth soles
With proper footwear, you’ll feel more confident and enjoy the adventure safely.
